Herdade de São Miguel Colheita Seleccionada 2020, from Alentejo

Herdade de São Miguel Colheita Seleccionada 2020 red wines, produced by Casa Relvas, in the Alentejo wine region of Portugal.

Casa Relvas is a family project, started in 1997 in São Miguel de Machede, in Redondo, by Alexandre Relvas. The project aims to continue the history of five generations with a strong passion for the Alentejo and its genuine nature. Over the years, the business grew and now totals many hectares of cork oak forest, olive groves, and vineyards 100% in integrated production.

On the three estates, Herdade de São Miguel, Herdade da Pimenta, and Herdade de São Miguel de Machede, Casa Relvas has the capacity to produce annually millions of bottles of wine, of which 70% are presented in external markets, in more than 30 countries around the world.

Their Herdade de São Miguel winery is located in Redondo as well, where the 35 ha of vines were planted in clay and schist soils and surrounded by a forest. Special terroir, since the Alentejo sun perfectly matches the soils and produces very characteristic grapes, producing robust and vigorous wines, with perfect freshness.

The first bottles of this Herdade de São Miguel Colheita Seleccionado Red were released onto the market in 2004.

This red wine is a blend of the Touriga Nacional, Syrah, Alicante Bouschet, and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties, among others.

Colheita Seleccionada means ‘selected harvest’.

The grapes were harvested mechanically during the night. Then total destemming and maceration before fermentation during 48h. Fermentation with controlled temperature in stainless steel vats. Maceration after fermentation between 5-10 days. Malolactic fermentation in stainless still vats with French oak. Aging in barrels for 4 months.

The wine presents a deep ruby color with hints of violet.

On the nose is fruity and playful with intense very ripe fruit aromas of raspberry, cherry, and plum, integrated with spicy and balsamic notes, such as vanilla, tobacco, anise, pepper, and coconut.

On the palate, round, rich and elegant taste of fruits with white pepper, and vanilla. Smooth tannins give a nice structure. The body is bold but very well-balanced. The aging in oak barrels is giving tobacco and earthy notes into the aftertaste.

Alcohol content: 14% vol.

Serve this wine at a temperature of 16 ºC.

Pairing well with Mediterranean food in general, pasta, lamb, poultry, and soft cheeses.

This wine has its own character, clearly demonstrating its origin, and not surprisingly it has won many gold medals since its first harvest.
