Here’s a good example of what fantastic red wines are made in Douro from the typical port wine grape varieties.
Avidagos Douro red wine by Quinta dos Avidagos, from the Douro wine region of Portugal.
The first Quinta has been in the family since 1670. Traditionally, the grapes were sold to Port Wine houses, but in 1996, the first trials began with their production at Quinta dos Avidagos. In 1999, the old Port Wine warehouse was remodeled and became the place where the barrels are aged.
Quinta dos Avidagos, the long-standing, unbroken family tradition, is now headed by the third generation of the founding family. It produces a wide range of wines, from reds to Port. Indigenous grape varieties allow it to achieve all the personality and character of the Douro “terroirs.”
This wine is a blend of the Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Barroca grape varieties, which grow in soil with very good sun exposure.
Alcohol 14% by vol.
The drink presents an intense, bright red color.
Complex aromas of ripe red fruits on the nose. On the palate, rounded taste and body with soft tannins. Semi-persistent finish. A not-filtered wine.
Pairs well with grilled white and red meat dishes.
