Croft Reserve Ruby Port

The merchant company that we know today as Croft was founded in 1588, during Elizabeth I’s reign, by Henry Thompson of York, England.

Croft is the oldest and one of the most illustrious of the traditional Port wine houses, dedicated to the production of all styles of the best Port wines, from the full-bodied Reserve Ports to the iconic Vintage Ports. The wines from this magnificent Quinta da Roêda, which has some of the oldest vineyards in the Douro region, form the heart of Croft’s Vintages. They are creating also innovative styles such as Croft Pink, the first rosé port wine.

Today, Croft is a part of the Fladgate Partnership, three of the most historic and highly regarded Porto houses, including Taylor, Fonseca, and Croft family-owned company.

This Croft Reserve Ruby Port is blended from red Ports produced in the Baixo Corgo and Cima Corgo areas of the Upper Douro Valley, selected for their depth of color, intense fruit and full, firm palate. These Port wines are matured for about three years in oak vats, where they soften and develop without losing their fresh, intense fruity character and their deep ruby color.

The fruits are sourced from the highest-quality individual growers in the Douro Valley, where the varying altitude and aspect of the vineyards create the potential for a complex wine of great character.

In the winery, the newly developed, robotic technology for treading allows the winery to maximize the quality of the fruit by imitating the traditional action of human feet and avoiding damage to the bitter grape seeds. Fermentation is halted by the addition of grape spirits before all the residual sugar has been fermented, creating a sweet, fortified wine.

This is a Port wine with attractive aromas, intense flavors, and fresh fruit, made from traditional Douro grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, and Tinta Amarela.

The wine presents a deep ruby color.

A powerful, rich blackcurrant bouquet with subtle hints of cedar, spice, and a hint of eucalyptus, on the nose.

On the palate, black, forest fruit and chocolate flavors dominate. It presents a rich bouquet of blackberries and blueberries with subtle notes of spice, cedar, light chocolate, and licorice. The wine has a good body and structure, exhibiting a very pleasant finish.

This lovely Ruby Reserve shows excellent concentration. In its youth, it is a little steely, that is ending with some strawberries mingled with rhubarb.
