Quinta da Penina – Colheita Selecionada 2018, from Algarve

Quinta da Penina – Colheita Selecionada 2018 is a red wine from Algarve, the southeast wine region of Portugal, produced by the Quinta da Penina winery.

The Algarve vines are grown on poor sandy soils that help refine the quality of grapes. That kind of soils allowed vines to survive to Filoxera disease at the beginning of the 20th century, which killed most of the European vineyards.

The winery at Quinta da Penina receives grapes from 3 farms located in two sub-regions DOP (Portimão and Lagoa) in the Algarve, taking advantage of different microclimates and soils, and producing soft wines.

The ’Colheita Selecionada’ on the wine’s label means ’Selected Harvest’ in English.

The wine is a blend of four Portuguese grape varieties: Castelão, Alicante Bouchet, Aragonez and Touriga Nacional.

Medium ruby in color, complex on the nose, smooth and dry in the mouth.

Pronounced dark red fruit aromas on the nose, blackberry, plum and black cherry, with smokey and dark chocolate notes. On the palate, flavors of very ripe, burned fruits, and also tobacco and a hint of vanilla appear, with low tannin level.

Strong fruity aftertaste with harsh acidity in a medium finish.

This is a medium-bodied wine with strong legs on the glass that shows the wine’s 14% of alcohol content.

An easy-drinking table wine. When you open, wait a while before serving.

This wine goes well with red meats, game, fat fishes, cataplanas, sausages, hams and soft-grazed cheeses.

Cheers!
