Vila Real Reserva 2016, from Douro

The Vila Real Reserva 2016 red wine was produced and bottled by Adega Cooperativa de Vila Real, in the Douro wine region of Portugal.

This winery was founded in 1955 in the Douro demarcated region. With more than 1300 associates, the wines from their cellar are the result of the work of the families of the region, who keep the landscape of the Douro alive. The wines from the Vila Real winery are recognized for their excellent quality/price ratio, having been elected “cooperative winery of the year” by the local wine magazine.

A deep ruby-colored red wine, made from the typical Douro grape varieties, such as Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional.

On the nose, intense aroma of red and black forest fruits, such as blackberry, plum and cherry, jammy, spicy and oaky notes (vanilla, tobacco, dark chocolate and caramel) and licorice evidence the maturation of the grape varieties planted in high and fresh areas of the Douro.

On the palate, a very fruity, juicy, full-bodied wine with balanced and pleasant acidity, and smooth noble tannins in a long, dry and warm finish.

The grape varieties give the typical notes of Douro wines to this wine, such as Tinta Roriz, the more aromatic and light one, the Touriga Franca shows a lot of fruit and discreet vegetable notes, and the elegance of Touriga Nacional.

Winemaking: the grapes are manually harvested. Destemming and crushing immediately, then conduction of grapes to the fermentation tanks in pasta tubing with heat exchanger. Fermentation in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature. More intense and prolonged maceration, partial malolactic fermentation in wood. Part of the lot is aged for a period of 12 months in predominantly French oak, with a small percentage of American wood.

Pairing well with spicy meats such as beef stew, grilled lamb and any game, sausages, or pizza.

Consume this wine on 16 °C temperature.

This Vila Real Reserva is a beautifully balanced, rustic Douro wine with impressive depth. A complex, gastronomic red that deserves our full attention.

This is one of the most popular wines from the Douro, has been getting more popular over the past years.
