Who was Mariana? The name refers to the legend of Mariana Alcoforado, a nun who lived in the well-known Torre de Beja and who fell in love with a French army colonel during the invasion that the Portuguese country suffered.
With this love as the central theme and the Vidigueira vineyards as the background, Mariana wrote several letters revealing her feelings to this soldier. To this day, the “Letters of a Portuguese Nun” is considered one of the most beautiful works of Alentejo literature worldwide. Since the first edition in1669, until today, there have been hundreds of editions in different languages, poems, plays, films, works of plastic, and musical interpretations.
And, from the terraces of Herdade do Rocim winery, you can see the tower of Beja Castle, reminding us of Mariana and her lover.
Herdade do Rocim is a project, and its winery is located between Vidigueira and Cuba, in Baixo Alentejo, with 70 hectares of vineyards.
This wine is a blend of the Touriga Nacional (40%), Aragonez (30%), Alicante Bouschet (20%), and Trincadeira (10%) grape varieties.
After manual harvesting, the grapes were subjected to careful selection on a vibrating mat in the cellar, then were destemmed with the slight crushing of the berries. After maceration, and fermentation in small stainless steel vats, aging in French oak barrels for six months.
This deep ruby-colored wine presents an exuberant aroma of red fruits on the nose, cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, with floral notes of violet.
A young, cheerful wine that reveals the charm of the region with its round tannins and good volume on the palate.
Alcohol content: 14%
The wine goes well with gourmet burgers, grilled vegetables, baked pasta, or thick-cut steaks.
