Flor de Penalva Reserva 2018, from Dão

Flor de Penalva Reserva 2018 was produced by the Adega Cooperativa de Penalva do Castelo, in the Dão wine region of Portugal.

The Adega Cooperativa de Penalva do Castelo seek to produce wines that retain some typical of the Dão Region, that is, fresh wines with structure, fruity and good body, able to please consumers of younger wines. The region has an excellent capacity to produce great wines, both white and red.

This Adega Cooperativa today receives grapes from more than 1200 ha of vineyards annually, produces an average of 10 million liters of wine, has the most modern technology of winemaking, aging and bottling of wines, being an essential reference for Dão wines.

In the heart of Dão, where is no surprise that grapes thrive just to the south, sheltered in the numerous clefts and folds of land between the mountain ranges of north-central Portugal – with the region’s proximity to the Douro.

This Flor de Penalva Reserva 2018 makes a great example of this, blending Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Alfracheiro and Jaen grape varieties, which were growing on a seasoned climate with Atlantic influence, and on sandy granitic origin soil, and was vinified in a traditional way and interned for about three months in oak wood, in order to gain some aromatic complexity.

Vinification: crushing with destemming, alcoholic fermentation in 30 t vats with temperature control and complete tanning. 3 months aging in barrels oak.

This is a Dão red wine with a modern profile and a pale ruby color.

On the nose, attractive fruity aromas of ripe forest fruits, with spicy and woody notes, dried grass and chocolate, a hint of pine and wildflowers, and some discreet smokiness surrounding this set.

On the palate, harmonious and smooth fruity flavors, freshness, and the typical intense tannins of the grape varieties. Attractive aromas, good volume and body in a long finish. A very well-done wine.

Its rich mouthfeel belies its moderate 13% abv, typical of the region.

Serve the wine at a temperature of 18 °C.

The wine is pairing well with more elaborate meat dishes, cheeses or sausages.

A beautiful, classic Dao wine for tasting!

Enjoy!
