São Domingos Millésime Espumante 2017, from Bairrada

And today let’s see the sparkling wine with which I celebrated my birthday last weekend!

São Domingos Millésime Espumante Branco Bruto, is a dry white sparkling wine, produced by Caves do Solar de São Domingos, in the Bairrada wine region of Portugal.

Since 1937, Caves São Domingos has been producing sparkling wines, brandies, and Bairrada wines.

The company was founded in 1937. Initially devoted to the production of sparkling wines, with which it obtained high national and international recognition, over time the range of products has been extended, adding old brandies, marc brandies and Bairrada wines.

Today, the cellars house more than two million bottles of sparkling wine that are made with the classic method, allowing an average aging of 2 to 10 years in the cellar, thousands of bottled wines and hundreds of French oak barrels for its famous brandies.

Summarizing, they have totally a larger area of 100 hectares in the demarcated region of Bairrada. One of these properties is Quinta de S. Lourenço, located in São Lourenço do Bairro, in the heart of Bairrada, and which has been producing wine since the dawn of 1800, with 5 hectares of vines made up of Baga, Touriga Nacional, Arinto and Bical grapes.

This wine was made from the Arinto and Bical grape varieties, in the vintage 2017. Produced using the traditional method, made its second fermentation on the bottle in the cellar: it stays 24 months, sur lies, until the dégorgement.

The sparkling presents a very pale yellow color, with fine, thin, very persistent bubbles in the flute.

Intense citrus aromas on the nose, some green apple, peach, some brioche and light floral. Subtle scent.

On the palate, it is elegant, and vibrant but balanced, with an explosion of creamy bubbles in the mouth. A medium-bodied, fresh wine with citric notes, good acidity and some minerality.

Despite not having much body, it has some freshness that allows it to accompany any dish. But if you are in Portugal, try it with the traditional leitão pig in Bairrada.

I liked the simplicity and very fine bubbles that this wine presents. If you enjoy sparkling wine from Bairrada, do not hesitate to taste this one.
