Let me show you now a classy, full-bodied red wine from one of Portugal’s lesser-known regions.
The Quinta dos Termos winery is an excellent representative of the Beira Interior wine region, located close to Belmonte, the land of Jews. (Click here to read my writing about Belmonte and its unique history, in the Algarve Plus Magazine, November issue 2021).
With its back, their vineyard faces the Serra da Estrela mountains with southern exposure on a steep slope and protected to the north by the mountain that delimits it. The Quinta has its own “terroir” with its own micro-climate and poor lands that naturally discipline the most productive varieties. The traditional varieties of the region are cultivated there.
This Quinta dos Termos DOC Reserva – Vinhas Velhas red wine is obtained from vines over 80 years old vines grapes of the varieties Trincadeira, Jaen, Rufete and Marufo grapes.
These are the most traditional and predominate grape varieties of the region.
After vinification, the must be aged in French oak and spent 6 months in a bottle before being put on sale.
The result is a wine with a lot of structure that is a pleasure to drink.
The wine presents an intense ruby color.
The aromas are very complex on the nose and convey freshness, combining a wild elegance with some ripe fruit, well-spiced with black pepper, rockrose, eucalyptus and pine needles, slight smoke, and a little fresh wild berries.
A very elegant wine with a fine lightness and a lot of persistent flavors on the palate. Very spicy taste with dark fruits. A dry wine with a fine texture, soft tannins and wood notes perfectly integrated. A pleasant freshness appears owned from the natural acidity of the region’s wines.
Vintage: 2018
13,5% ABV
Consume this wine at a temperature of 16-18 °C.
Pairing well with roasted meats, game dishes, or buttery cheese.
A really lovely red wine from the Beira Interior region.
