Alto Pina Vinhas Velhas 2019 Red, from Setúbal

Alto Pina Vinhas Velhas red wine from the vintage 2019, in the Península de Setúbal wine region of Portugal.

It all started when a beer magnate José Rovisco Pais donated his Pegões properties to the Lisbon State Hospitals. On these properties the Government implemented a large “colonization” project, donating land to thousands of agricultural workers, including 830 hectares of vineyard. The Cooperative was established in 1958 and the first Pegões wines were then born.

Cooperativa Agrícola de Santo Isidro de Pegões is located between two Nature Reserves – the Tagus estuary to the Northwest and the Sado on the Southwest, on the east side of the Arrabida hills. The climate is Mediterranean and the soil is sandy. It is this climate/soil combination that gives birth to the unique Pegões wines.

Nowadays, Pegões is a modern and competitive winery recognized both in the national and international markets. Its wines have been distinguished with more hundred awards at the most important international wine contests, so far.

This wine is made from the best grapes of Castelão with a touch of Aragonez and Alicante Bouschet varieties. It was aged in oak to gain complexity.

The wine presents a garnet color.

Intense and complex aromas of ripe forest fruits, blackberries, vanilla, spices, and dried tea leaves on the nose.

On the palate, a full-bodied wine with rich tannins, appealing acidity, and aromas of well-integrated wood. A complex wine that still evolves well in the bottle for years.

14,5% alcohol content.

Should be served at a temperature of 16-18 °C.

An excellent gastronomic wine to be paired with veal meat or the regional, buttery, Azeitão cheese.

A great wine from the Setúbal wine region!
