Imprevisto [unexpected] red wine from the Algarve wine region of Portugal, produced by Adega do Convento do Paraíso.
The winery is located opposite the historical city of Silves, where grapes have been cultivated for several centuries. In the 15th century, the estate came into the hands of a family who renovated the buildings, and in 2000, the family decided to plant 12 hectares of vineyards with new, young vines. With the aim, of course, to make the best wines on this special terroir. To realize this, the family started working together with the Soares family in 2012. And thus the Convento do Paraiso project was born. The vineyards are located on the left bank of the Arade river where there is dry and warm, but the soil contains many water sources and nutrients. A perfect base for the deeply rooted vines.
The wine’s Portuguese name Imprevisto means unexpected in English, and that is exactly what the winemakers want with this wine: unique wines that surprise.
The Imprevisto is a red blend of Touriga Nacional and Aragonez grape varieties, from the vintage of 2018. Manual harvest during the first hours of the day, then the grapes are carefully selected. The fermentation occurred in inox vats at a controlled temperature, in the modern, well-equipped winery at the entrance to the estate, alongside the emblematic “Convent of Paradise”. Partial aging in used French oak barrels.
Medium ruby color with a light hue on the edge.
A lot of ripe fruits on the nose, black plum and blackberry, with some earthy notes of cedar and tobacco. Sweet floral aromas of violet, and a hint of wet stone smell.
On the palate, a seductive and imposing, medium-bodied red wine full of lots of opulent fruits and freshness, with a delicate floral note and some cocoa that blends into a spicy background with a slight austerity.
Warm and soft flavors with ripe but present tannins and a bit higher acidity. Light warm profile in the medium-long, refreshing finish.
High alcohol at 14% as many Algarve wines are.
Goes well with steaks, burgers, tomato-based pasta, or blue cheese.
For me, the high quality of this wine was not unexpected. Algarve is a region of great tradition and huge potential. And this red one is good proof of that. So, surprise yourself with this wine and imagine you are in the Algarve!
Cheers!
