Vinotherapy in Portugal

Do you like to de-stress with a glass of wine in your hand? What if I tell you that wine and grapes can help you relax? I bathed in red wine and it changed my skin and energy! Every day we hear or read more and more about wine spas and vinotherapy in Portugal as well. So after all, what kind of beauty therapy is this and what is it for?

There have been many different studies into the health benefits of wine and to see whether they do have the benefits that have been claimed for them. They show if you drink alcohol it helps reduce heart attacks. Heart disease is one of the number one killers so anything that helps reduce that is fantastic. So, we already know that red wine has heart-healthy benefits by drinking it in moderation, but what can red wine do for our skin?

The concept of bathing in wine isn’t a new one — Cleopatra was allegedly a big fan. And while we don’t know what that practice was named back then, the popular name for this spa treatment now is vinotherapy.

Vinotherapy is the use of wine by-products like grapes, seeds, skins, pulp, and stems for beauty and relaxation purposes, helping to heal both the mind and body. And with its excellent exfoliating qualities, reduces problems associated with aging. Vinotherapy makes use of these benefits from grape and vine extracts to provide effective anti-aging and relaxing skincare treatments.

When wine-making, many parts of the grape get discarded, such as the branches, vines, and grape skin. And these ingredients all promote healthy skin and protect it from damage.

For example, inside grape seeds are compounds that strengthen collagen that works with elastin to keep their skin firm. The active ingredients in the seeds result in greater skin elasticity and fewer wrinkles. In fact, it is thought that red wine grape seeds alone are more effective than Vitamin E in preventing wrinkles.

In addition, the branches, vines, and skins are rich in polyphenols. These compounds, when applied to your skin, give a youthful glow.  One polyphenol is resveratrol, which has been proven to be highly effective when it comes to skincare. These by-products of wine provide antioxidants to fight illness, reduce wrinkles by stimulating collagen production, reduce acne by clearing pores, add glow to the complexion like a natural blusher, and improve hair health since it thickens hair and encourages hair growth.

But is rubbing the raw ingredients into your skin really the best way to get the health effects?

Vinotherapy is a lavish spa treatment that utilizes the powerful properties of grapes and wine. Scientific research has found that after spending at least 20-30 minutes in the red wine bath, the skin becomes more hydrated, smoother, velvety and elastic. With its regular use, the signs of aging can also be delayed.

Luckily we don’t have to travel that far to try the wine bath. Portugal’s geographical and climatic features are excellent for wine production, and the interest in vinotherapy treatments is also huge here. Thus, many domestic hotels also provide us with the opportunity to immerse ourselves up to our necks in the precious, healing juice. Now, let’s explore some Portuguese spa hotels, having the raw ingredients of wine, including whole grapes, kneaded gently into our skin.

But beware, it is forbidden to drink from the pool!
