Covela Avesso 2020 – Quinta de Covela located in a natural amphitheater with southern exposure on the slopes of the Douro River, located on the border between the granite area of the Vinhos Verdes Region and the schist region of Port Wines, since the 16th century.
With panoramic views over the river, the farm has 49 hectares, 18 of which are planted with vineyards. The Quinta practices organic farming on terraces planted at low altitudes. They don’t use synthetic chemical herbicides and pesticides here. The climate is on the border between the Mediterranean climate of the Douro and the maritime influence of the Douro Litoral with cold winter and hot, dry summer.
The Quinta was once owned by filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira until 2011 when Marcelo Lima, a Brazilian businessman, and Tony Smith, a former journalist and correspondent bought it. Then Rui Cunha winemaker (Winemaker of the Year in 2022 in Portugal by Revista de Vinhos) joined the team.
Today, Lima & Smith Lda. operates Quinta de Covela, in an area that is the birthplace of the Avesso grape variety.
Avesso, with its origins in the sub-region of Baião, is the queen grape variety of Covela. A notoriously difficult variety to cultivate, but in Covela it flourishes. With thin-skinned, fragile and sensitive berries, it is often nicknamed prima donna. It produces fresh, vibrant wines with citrus and tropical fruit notes, remarkable structure, and minerality.
This white wine was the first Vinho Verde produced by Quinta de Covela. For this, exclusively the Avesso variety is used.
After manual harvesting and gentle pressing, fermentation in stainless steel tanks with temperature control. Aging on fine lees until mid-February 2020. Light filtration before bottling.
The wine has a crystal clear pale yellow color.
Elegant white floral aromas on the nose, full of freshness, some tropical and citrus fruits, with notes of white pulp fruit. Peach, apple, lime, and orange, with mineral aromas standing out.
Great, crispy acidity connects the fruit and light floral notes, and freshness is always present. A dry wine with a medium body, great structure, and a delicious finish.
