Today we go back to my home, Algarve, the southernmost, warm wine region of Portugal.
This Onda Nova red wine was produced by Adega do Cantor winery, owned by Sir Cliff Richard, a British pop star.
Sir Cliff has known and loved the Algarve for over 60 years. His idea was to plant a vineyard at his property Quinta do Moinho and base his brand Onda Nova’ which means ‘New Wave’ in Portuguese. Sir Cliff is very much involved in producing the wine, he can often be seen in his vineyard.
This regional wine is one product of his mark, made from 100% of Syrah grape in the vintage of 2015, which was growing on red clay and sandy loam soil, at Quinta do Miradouro.
Maturation in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 24 months. Bottling in April of 2018.
The wine presents a very deep ruby color in the glass, with nice wine legs thanks to its 15% alcohol content.
On the nose, aromas of ripe black fruits, plum, blackberries and blackcurrant, with some hint of pepper, jammy nuances, accompanied smoky notes.
In the mouth, a good structure and nice density with fruity and smoky flavors. The medium-level tannins and acidity are in a very good balance. Long and persistent, dry finish with some smokiness.
Food ideas of Sir Cliff to his wine: Wild boar and stewed beans; filet mignon sautéed in a blue cheese sauce with seasonal vegetables; Roasted white grouper with sautéed potatoes.
This Syrah wine is also pairing well with lamb, gyros, or Asian and Indian spicy meals.
Consume this drink at a temperature of 18 °C.
A very nice, intense and delicious Syrah wine from the sunny Algarve region!
