Fiuza Chardonnay 2019, from Tejo

June 10 is the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities. A public holiday that commemorates the death on 10 June 1580 of Luís de Camões, a poet and national literary icon.

Camões wrote Os Lusíadas (usually translated as The Lusiads), Portugal’s national epic poem celebrating Portuguese history and achievements.

He became a symbol of Portugal’s nationalism. Since his date of birth is unknown, his date of death is celebrated annually as Portugal’s National Day.

Let’s celebrate with this Fiuza Chardonnay from the Tejo wine region of Portugal.

Fiuza & Bright, LDA   is a century-old, modern family estate that produces its wines with grapes from their own estates, growing in clay-limestone soil, and harvested manually and mechanically, ensuring high-quality wines. Fiuza is a pioneer also in the study of international grape varieties in Portuguese soils, combining indigenous Portuguese grapes with international varietals. This Fiuza Chardonnay belongs to their collection of single varietal wines and it expresses the best characteristics of this grape which was growing on clay-limestone soil.

The wine presents a pale golden color with an intense green hue.

Fruity tropical scents on the nose, kiwi, pineapple and passion fruit, with a light touch of vanilla.

On the palate, good structure, complex, fruity and velvety, with a floral flavor of apple blossom. A well-balanced, aromatic white wine, fresh, mineral with extreme elegance. A final touch of honey in a very pleasant, excellent long finish.

Harvest in August, aging ‘sur lie’ (on the lees).

Alcohol content: 12%.

Serve this wine at 11-13 °C of temperature.

Goes well with oyster, shrimp and other seafood, creamy risottos, or figs.
