Marquês dos Vales Selecta, from Algarve

Marquês dos Vales Selecta 2015 is a red wine produced by Quinta dos Vales, in the Algarve, the southern wine region of Portugal.

The owner of Quinta dos Vales has long been an adventurous entrepreneur. Art, especially sculpturing, has long been his hobby. That together with his passion for wine resulted in Quinta dos Vales – a unique wine estate with hundreds of colorful sculptures in an open-air exhibition.

On Quinta dos Vales the unique grape varieties to Portugal flourish along with international varieties that have adjusted to the unique climate and soil of the Algarve region.

Their wines are subdivided into two brands – Marquês dos Vales and Dialog. There are several labels under the Marquês dos Vales brand, that are representations of the owner’s art, as the combination of wine and art is a recurring theme around the estate.

The Quinta produces this Marquês dos Vales Selecta red wine with the best Syrah, Aragonez, Touriga Nacional, Castelão and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the 2015 vintage.

The wine presents a medium garnet color with brownish nuances on the edge.

On the nose, aromas of wild berry fruits and wildflowers, blackberries, rock rose and cherry blossom, accompanied with spicy notes, vanilla, with hints of chocolate, leather and coffee.

On the palate, typical flavors of grapes ripened under intense sunshine, persisting tannins in a perfect balance with harsh acidity. Good structure and some complexity in the mouth. Persistent and charming finish, where the tannins predominate.

The drink has 13,5% of alcohol content.

Winemaking: the grapes are harvested by hand, placed in a single layer in small 10 kg boxes to prevent excess pressure on the grapes, and to be processed the day after the harvest at cold temperatures. After cooling, the grapes are again selected and destemmed in order to prevent unwanted tannins and then macerated straight into vessels for 3 – 4 days at a controlled temperature. Yeast is then added to the must, and fermentation occurs for 15 – 20 days. Maturation then takes place in French oak barrels for 10 months to give the finishing touches of tannins and flavor.

The wine goes well with a good assortment of sausages and hams, ducky liver patés, red or white meat and varied game, oven-cooked pork meat or a nice barbecue with a board of national or foreign cheeses.

Consume this wine at a temperature of 16-18ºC.

A tasty, full-bodied wine from the sunny Algarve region.
