Sobreiro de Pegões Premium Red 2019, from Setúbal

Sobreiro de Pegões Premium red wine, produced by Adega de Pegões winery, in the Península de Setúbal wine region of Portugal.

It all started in 1958 when the Adega de Pegões Cooperative winery was founded and the first Pegões wines were born. In the beginning, the Cooperative received financial and technical support from the State. As a consequence of the Portuguese revolution of 1974, the Cooperative was taken over and a period of instability followed. This process was later reversed and over the last decades, the Cooperative followed a strategy of modernization with the aim of continuously improving the quality and value of its wines.

Nowadays, Pegões is a modern and competitive winery recognized both in the domestic and international markets, awarded with more than 500 awards at the most important international wine contests.

Península de Setúbal region is characterized by a climate with great conditions: the soil is pozolitic and sandy, rich in water, with influences from the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. This perfect harmony gives us marvelous quality wines like this Sobreiro the Pegões Premium red wine.

The wine is a blend of Castelão (40%), Aragonez (40%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) grape varieties. Alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature followed by prolonged skin maceration. Aged in French and American oak barrels.

Its garnet color presents youth.

The wine shows pronounced intense aromas of baked dark fruits, blackberry, plum, prunes, and cherry, almost jammy on the nose.

When it reaches the mouth is pure velvet, a nice smokey flavor with fruits and notes of chocolate. Medium to high tannins, medium acidity, and heavier body. But there is an excellent balance between the tannins, fruits, oak, and other aromas. Medium finish with a long taste of vanilla.

Pairing well with red meats, game, and BBQ.

This is a fairly concentrated, powerful red wine with 14% alcohol content, but really enjoyable!

Cheers!
